What is a Zapier trigger?

Updated Oct 25, 2026

Definition

A Zapier trigger is the event in one app that starts an automation (a “Zap”) in Zapier, for example “a new meeting summary is ready”. Zapier then runs one or more actions in other apps, such as posting to Slack or adding a row to a spreadsheet.

How a Zap works

  • Trigger: something happens in app A, like a new action item.
  • Action: Zapier does something in app B, like creating a Trello card.
  • Fields: you choose which details from the trigger go where in the action.

Instant and polling triggers

An instant trigger sends the event to Zapier the moment it happens. A polling trigger is checked on a schedule, so there can be a delay of several minutes.
