What is a meeting action item?

Updated Oct 25, 2026

Definition

A meeting action item is a task that people agree on in a meeting, with one person who owns it and, ideally, a due date. Action items are how a meeting turns into work that gets done.

What makes a good action item

  • One owner: a named person, not “the team”.
  • A clear task: starts with a verb: “Send the revised quote to Globex”.
  • A due date: so everyone knows when to expect it.

Why action items slip

They're said out loud but never written down, nobody is named as the owner, or they live in one person's notes. Writing them down with an owner and checking them before the next meeting fixes most of this.

How Acta tracks action items

Acta finds the action items in each meeting with their owners and due dates, and lists them from all your meetings under My meetings → Outcomes, with totals for open, overdue, due this week and done. You can group them by meeting or by person, remind an owner, turn on a daily follow-up email, and send tasks to Jira, Asana, ClickUp or Monday.com.

FAQ

What's the difference between an action item and a decision?

A decision is what was agreed (“we launch on Nov 14”). An action item is a task someone does because of it (“Ravi fixes the refund flow by Oct 31”).

Can action items from meetings go to Jira automatically?

Yes. Acta's Ticket suggestions template lists the tasks agreed in a meeting and creates them as tickets in Jira, Asana, ClickUp or Monday.com once you connect your account.
