What is SPIN selling?

Updated Nov 1, 2026

Definition

SPIN selling is a sales method built on four kinds of questions: Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff. Asked in order, they lead the buyer from describing their situation to saying, in their own words, why a solution is worth it.

The four question types

  • Situation: “How does your team handle this today?”
  • Problem: “Where does that process break down?”
  • Implication: “What does that cost you each month?”
  • Need-payoff: “If that was fixed, what would it mean for the team?”

Why it works

Implication and Need-payoff questions let the buyer explain the value themselves, which is more convincing than a seller's pitch. The common mistake is asking too many Situation questions and stopping there.

How Acta reviews SPIN calls

Acta's SPIN deal report captures the situation, problem, implication and need-payoff answers from the call, so you can see which stage the buyer reached and what to ask next, along with objections and next steps.

FAQ

Is SPIN selling a qualification framework?

Not exactly. SPIN is about how to ask questions in discovery. Frameworks like BANT and MEDDPICC are about what you need to know to qualify a deal.

Who created SPIN selling?

Neil Rackham, who described it in his 1988 book SPIN Selling, based on research into thousands of sales calls.
