What is SPICED?
Updated Nov 1, 2026
Definition
SPICED is a sales discovery framework built around the buyer: Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical event and Decision. It helps sellers understand why a customer would buy, why now, and how they will decide.
What each part means
- Situation: the facts about the customer today: team, tools, process.
- Pain: the problem they want to fix.
- Impact: what fixing it is worth, in numbers or in how work changes.
- Critical event: the date or event that means they must act, such as a renewal or launch.
- Decision: how they will decide, and who is involved.
Where SPICED fits
SPICED is popular in recurring-revenue and SaaS sales because Impact and Critical event also explain renewals and expansion, not only the first sale.
How Acta writes SPICED notes
Acta's SPICED deal report reads the sales call and sorts what the buyer said into Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical event and Decision, then adds objections, procurement notes and next steps.

Can I use SPICED and MEDDPICC together?
Yes. Many teams use SPICED for discovery and MEDDPICC to qualify larger deals later in the cycle.
