What is BANT?
Updated Nov 1, 2026
Definition
BANT is a sales qualification framework that checks four things about a lead: Budget, Authority, Need and Timeline. If all four are clear, the deal is worth pursuing; if not, the gaps show what to find out next.
What each letter means
- Budget: is there money for this, and roughly how much?
- Authority: who signs off, and are they involved?
- Need: what problem does the buyer need solved, and how badly?
- Timeline: when do they need it, and what is driving the date?
Questions to ask
- “Have you set aside budget for this, or would it need approval?”
- “Who else is involved in choosing a tool like this?”
- “What happens if you don't solve this in the next six months?”
- “Is there a date you're working towards?”
BANT vs. MEDDPICC
BANT
Four questions, quick to cover in a first call. Suits simpler sales and inbound leads.
MEDDPICC
Eight parts, including the decision and paper process. Suits large deals with many people involved.
How Acta fills in BANT from your calls
Acta's BANT qualification template pulls budget, authority, need and timeline out of the sales call and puts them in one view, with what is still unknown, plus objections and next steps. It runs on calls recorded from Zoom, Google Meet or Teams, with or without a bot.

Is BANT still used?
Yes, especially for first calls and SDR qualification, where a quick check of budget, authority, need and timeline is enough to decide the next step.
What's the difference between BANT and SPICED?
BANT checks whether a lead is qualified. SPICED focuses on the buyer's situation, pain, impact and the event that forces a decision, and suits recurring-revenue sales.
